Castel Sant'Angelo

How to Get to Castel Sant'Angelo

Quick answer: The main entrance is at Lungotevere Castello 50, on the right bank of the Tiber, about a ten-minute walk from Saint Peter's Square. The closest metro stations are Lepanto (Line A, 12 minutes on foot) and Ottaviano (Line A, 15 minutes on foot). Several bus lines stop near the castle, and a taxi from Termini takes about fifteen minutes in light traffic.

Address

Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo

Lungotevere Castello 50

00193 Rome, Italy

The entrance faces the Tiber, directly at the foot of the cylindrical castle. The street address can be a little misleading at first — the formal gate is set slightly back from the river, at the end of a short ramp beside the Ponte Sant'Angelo.

By metro

Rome's metro does not reach Castel Sant'Angelo directly, but two stations on Line A (the orange line) are within comfortable walking distance. Both routes cross flat ground and are signposted.

Lepanto station — 12 minutes on foot

The closest metro station to the castle. On leaving the station, walk south along Via Marcantonio Colonna, then turn left onto Via Cola di Rienzo until you reach Piazza Cavour. From there, continue south past the Palazzo di Giustizia and cross Ponte Umberto I to reach the castle. It is a straightforward walk through the Prati district.

Ottaviano station — 15 minutes on foot

The station most travellers use when combining Castel Sant'Angelo with the Vatican Museums. On leaving Ottaviano, walk down Via Ottaviano toward Saint Peter's Square, then turn left onto Via della Conciliazione. The avenue leads directly to the castle, with Saint Peter's dome behind you and the Tiber ahead.

By bus

Several ATAC bus lines stop within a two-minute walk of the entrance. The most useful stops are Piazza Pia (on the castle side of the river) and Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II (on the opposite bank).

  • Lines 23, 280, 982 — run along the Lungotevere and stop at Piazza Pia.
  • Line 40 Express — the fastest connection from Termini station, with a stop at Piazza Pia.
  • Line 62 — connects the historic center (Piazza Venezia, Largo Argentina) with Piazza Pia.
  • Line 64 — the classic Termini-to-Vatican tourist line, with a stop close to the castle.

Tickets cost €1.50 and are valid on all ATAC buses, trams, and metro for 100 minutes. They can be bought at tobacco shops (tabaccherie), newsstands, and metro station machines.

Walking from the main landmarks

Castel Sant'Angelo sits between the Vatican and the historic center, which makes it easy to reach on foot from either. The three routes below are the ones most visitors take.

From Saint Peter's Square — 10 minutes

Walk east along Via della Conciliazione, the straight avenue leading away from the basilica. The castle appears at the end of the street. This is the most scenic approach — the cylindrical silhouette grows as you walk toward it, framed by the columns of Bernini's colonnade behind you.

From Piazza Navona — 12 minutes

Leave Piazza Navona from its north end, follow Via dei Coronari west through the antiques district, and cross the Tiber over Ponte Sant'Angelo. The bridge itself, lined with Bernini's ten angels, delivers you to the foot of the castle.

From Termini station — 35 minutes on foot, 15 by taxi

Walking from Termini is possible but long — the route runs through Via Nazionale, Piazza Venezia, and along the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II before crossing the Tiber. Most visitors take Line A of the metro from Termini to Lepanto, or catch the 40 Express bus, which covers the same distance in about twenty minutes.

By taxi

Licensed Rome taxis are white with a "TAXI" sign on the roof and a meter visible from the passenger seat. A ride from Termini to Castel Sant'Angelo typically costs €12–€16 in normal traffic, and slightly more on Sundays and at night. The airport has fixed fares that include the castle area within the city zone.

  • From Fiumicino Airport: fixed fare of €50 to any address inside the Aurelian Walls, including Castel Sant'Angelo.
  • From Ciampino Airport: fixed fare of €31.
  • Within the historic center: short hops are metered; expect €8–€12 from Piazza Venezia or Piazza Navona.

Drop-off happens on Lungotevere Castello, in front of the main gate. Uber and similar services operate in Rome under the Uber Black category, generally at higher prices than a standard taxi.

Accessibility

The ground floor, the courtyards, and the armoury are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Access to the upper levels — the papal apartments and the Angel's Terrace — involves multiple flights of stairs and is not suitable for wheelchairs. A lift serves part of the route but does not reach the terrace.

  • Disabled visitors and one accompanying adult enter free of charge.
  • Wheelchairs are available on request at the ticket office, subject to availability.
  • Guide dogs are permitted throughout the castle.
